i'll just jump in with a question(s) without an intro. hope that's o.k. - energy really low and my brain is "tired".
i'm going to do a hair analysis. the info on the kit sais that if you can't get a sample from the head you can use pubic hair. i called the lab and some unfriendly "assistant" said that the head hair is preferred but was not able to tell me why this is so.
i've lost so much hair in the last two years and the kit instructions say that you need to use Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo for two weeks. well, just putting my head under the shower is traumatic for me, it's taken a long time to find a couple good shampoos (an aubrey product and a waleda product, both for dry and damaged and thinning hair), my hair is so dry that i wash it no more than twice a week, the idea of using the J&J shampoo with all that crap in it and the fact that They animal test ... well you get the picture.
and finally it would just be darn difficult to get the hair from the back of my head plus given that i've lived in the city for nearly twenty years, have smoked for that long as well (i've got it down to 4 a day) have a mouth full of mercury, am a highly sensitive sort, have the symtoms of a metal/mercury poisoning, isn't it safe to assume that the test will confirm what i suspect and if i'm right, what does it matter if the hair is pubic? would this just affect the amount of a metal that shows up or is it just not generally as accurate.
i hope my question is clear enough. i'm giggling at the length of time it's taken me to form those last two sentences.
does anyone know the answer to my question?
thank you in advance.
i hope one and all are feeling alot better than i!
:),

Kim,

Sorry to be slow. I was on the road and you have perhaps made a decision already.

Let me put it this way. I used to correspond quite a bit with someone who owns a lab that does hair analysis. I will try to keep my responses focused. First, in his case, they ask for the brand of the shampoo used (and why doesn't anyone ask about conditioner?) I seriously doubt any labs are sophisticated enough to adjust results by a certain amount given the fact that in the last six months, you washed your hair twice with J & J and six times with Weleda and x number of times with something else.

This said, he did a test with gauze and had someone press the gauze between the teeth. The amount of mercury on the gauze was significant when compared to another piece from the same package that had not been pressed between the teeth. In short, these tests, when properly performed, can be very sensitive. However, he says he has performed some tests on materials from archeological sites and they also have mercury and aluminum????

The reason for having a test done is to fine tune your protocol. If you are going to self-prescribe on a symptomatic basis, you might want to skip the baseline test. Obviously, you will know more if you have some guidelines. The reason for taking hair from the nape of the neck is that it is inconspicuous and more recent in growth.

I played a trick on a lab once and sent hair from my brush. The results were wild, but I don't know whether they were meaningful or not. I do know people who have used hair from other parts of the body.

Thanks Ingrid.

I assumed that the request/order to use the J&J baby shampoo was so that the same shampoo was used "across the board" and that the J&J was a relatively "gentle" and "pure" shampoo compared to what the average american consumer uses. You don't have to go to a health food store to buy it which the majority of folks don't do and it doesn't have all the extra extra ingredients that make your hair super shiny and manageable.
Also, I think that I was told that it was particularly useful in removing external debris from the hair.
I dunno.

I don't mind using the nape of the neck hair but the instructions on the kit that I have has a diagram that circles a large area on the back of the head and asks for 7 cuttings from all different areas within the cirlce. I think I'll just use the nape of the neck hair or if I feel too wimpy to do that, I'll use the pubic hair. (I wonder why the pubic hair is not as accurate or if that's even true. Maybe it's just more difficult to handle. It seems that it would be a good choice because it's not subjected to the outer world).

Thanks,
Kim

I have had my 6 year old daughters hair tested because she has learning disablities and a speech delay and has been evaluated by several different agencies to no avail. I am searching for a cause. the test came out pretty toxic, Aluminum .60, 133 % significant toxicities, Mercury .02, 80 %, selenium .05 100%, her sodium and postassum were off the charts at 177 and 138, calcium was also high 27. The health food store sugested that I start her on a supplement program that would invlove her ingesting 5 capsules 3 times a day, which would be impossible. I don't know where to start, any sugestions
