Dear Ingrid,

I am really impressed by your site. Can you offer any suggestions to help with menstrual/perimenopausal problems? I have been bleeding now for weeks, my doctors prescription of synthetic hormones hasn't done a thing yet, and I am not having a lot of luck finding good information on this subject-mostly I find many sites for sales of expensive creams and spplements, that promise to cure every problem known to woman-kind.

Thank you
Cathie

Cathie,

You didn't mention your age, merely that you are approaching The Menopause.

Many women experience bleeding at this time, but it is not normal. It is a source of worry, excessive blood loss, devitalization, and sometimes even anemia.

Most women I know can stop the bleeding easily enough with Yunnan Paiyao, something we have in the online store (with the staggering price tag of $3.10) but this merely addresses bleeding, not the cause which unfortunately is often due to fibroids or other uterine growths rather than wild hormonal fluctuations.

On the assumption that you are trying to approach this naturally and hoping to avoid a hysterectomy, you might try some tonifying herbs. I have been thinking of posting some pages on women's health problems, but I try to discuss only subjects that people can generally administer on their own (and products that I know to be suitable).

I have an herbal pharmacy so obviously there is lots there that is not mentioned online. I would consider a two-month program of attempting to normalize the reproductive system, but if there is an underlying pathological problem, you might be better off knowing this before making a decision? You see, it's tricky.

I could ask you 40 or 50 questions, but we might still not get all the answers needed. A private consultation is a possibility, but it would still not be a substitute for a proper medical exam. You have a need for information . . . and I only work with the information provided. I can't generate it on my own.

All this said, I have used an herbal protocol for years for regulating the cycle, tonifying the reproductive system, and detoxifying the body. Next?

Hi Ingrid, I saw the posting on abnormal bleeding and that would be me.
I have had blood in my urine for so long now that it seems normal. I have
been to the medical center and they found no infection to be causing it
but put me on sulfur anyway. That was in February I guess. After last
years more of the same I finally got tired of it and went to get it checked.
I am 47 years old. I began menopause at 42. I seldom even have hot
flashes anymore. There is absolutely no pain when I urinate. So without
pain I do not feel threatened. The blood ranges from coffee black to bright
red and then disappears for a few day and I have clear urine. I drink at
least 2 gallons of water a day...no joke! And other juices. No coffee or
tea. You know, I read sometime ago your postings on can-x. I did take
the pills for a cleansing but that was probablly in oct or nov of last year.
If I remember the blood began around that time but I don't remember
connecting the two things. I didn't finish the 60 tab bottle. Okay. I'm
reading your site and interested in gallbladder and all the other tune ups.
I love your site and fwded it to friends and family. God Bless your
wonderful efforts and precious time. Janice

Oh, oh!

Janice, blood in urine is really not normal. The variety of types of blood is a worry. Red blood certainly suggests fresh blood, maybe from a kidney stone? It's really hard to tell. Black blood is certainly odd in view of your post-menopausal state. This said, I'm wondering if you really are post-menopause? Are you sure the blood is in the urine? What if it is merely appearing when you pass water? What if it is related to the change?

I do not know if Can-X could tie in here. Since discussing this, I have had more occasion to discuss this product with other practitioners. There is no zinc chloride in the formula at this time (I don't know if there ever was but I am assured it is not part of the formula now.)

At minimum, you seem to have some kind of obstruction because dark blood suggests old blood and it shouldn't be visible on a daily basis. It would seem important to determine the cause.

The gall bladder flush would probably serve to dredge a particular area of your body but would be unlikely to correct the condition you have described. I have a program for change of life, but I wouldn't want you to put off proper evaluations of your health just because you have found my tune up protocols!

I saw the message on abnormal bleeding and wanted to share my experiences. I went through a period of abnormal bleeding for about six months, then had surgery. After the surgery, they put me on a hormone called Lupron. I finally got off of the Lupron and the abnormal bleeding returned.

Prior to the surgery, I noticed that the bleeding was heaviest after I had bindged on sugar. Then it waned, then I would have a lot of sugar and the blood would gush out more.

As I moved towards a purer more "detoxification diet" which is mostly raw, but partly cooked, I improved. After the surgery, however, I had quit sugar, but became sensitive to doing too much fruit relative to greens and good fats/protiens. The blood started coming again. My acupuncturist tested me and determined my body was having a hard time eliminating insulin. She did two treatments on me (she has a specialized program that comes from West Germany) to assist my body in eliminating insulin. SInce then, I have been careful to limit even the "good" sugars, maintain a balanced (not in the Standard American Diet sense, but in the macrobiotic/raw foods sense) diet. The bleeding is gone and I feel much better.

Susan,

For the record, can you be clear about the role surgery might have played in the "cure" described above?

I have experienced periods which last three days
all my life, and which made me dizzy due to the rapid blood loss.

I have been examined and was told I just chemically have a heavy period. My best friend's husband, a prestigious doctor, had
researched it for me, and it turns out there is an iron deficiency.

I took a supplement called "Perfect Iron"
(after trying several other brands that constipate me) once a day for four months
and my periods began to expand to five days
(at a normal flow level).

It was an inexpensive and curative help
to my lifelong situation. It may help you as well...

This is a condition that definitely requires professional management. There could be a number of causes, but a growth in the uterus in one possibility. There is probably also liver congestion, hormonal imbalance, dietary challenges, and perhaps many other contributing factors. With the blood loss, you would also become anemic and tired so the cycle would not self-correct without some intervention. This does not mean that surgery is inevitable, but it's important to find the cause and eliminate it.

Good luck.

Sian,

Black blood is usually old and/or toxic. It would be good to consult a doctor to determine the cause. Once you have a diagnosis, you can explore your options.

Good luck.

I am 20 years old and I am on the pill and have been for about 3 years. I have noticed recently that a couple of days before I come on and sometimes before I have finished taking the last pill I have brownish to black bleeding. I don't know if this is normal and have read the first message which was posted and am wondering if it may be the same. The only difference is that I haven't had backache but I have had the occasional dizzy spell. I have had brownish blood for quite some time but it is only recent that it has become darker.

Suzanne,

You might want to discuss this with the doctor writing the prescription for you. It's not unusual to spot before the onset of menses, but the question is always how much spotting is normal and what the various indications would be for a check up. If you can find another way to manage the risk of pregnancy, that might be worth considering also. You could try some blood cleansing and liver detoxifying herbs, but these tend to have the opposite energetics as the pill so you'd need to think this through before jumping into something.

Best wishes!

I am eighteen years old, and have had my period for six years now. Today I noticed large amounts of reddish blood in my urine, despite the fact that it is two weeks before my period, and I am normally quite regular. Is this anything I should be concerned about?

Hello. I had a child in December 04. In February I started the birth control shot and was on it for one cycle, 3 months. I bled heavily through all of those 3 months minus 7 days. I have not gone back to get another shot and have just gotten a regular period. The problem is that I am passing HUGE clots. By HUGE I mean 5 inches+ in length and 3-4 inches wide. HUGE. This has been happening for 2 days. I am soaking pads quickly and it's starting to scare me. I am 28 years old. Please help. You can email me at foster_angelena@yahoo.com

I turn 18 in one month, and I am sexually active. My period was late about a week or so until I was cleaning after urinating and noticed blood. Assuming it was my period I put on a tampon, only to remove it later that day...noticing the blood color was very dark, brownish and it was very very light. Taking into consideration the second day is heavier, I waited and saw the blood only got darker and SLIGHTLY heavier. I plan on going to the doctor this week, but what could this mean?

I am 54 and going thru menopause. I began bleeding vaginally during a 3 day fast in July. My menses had not occured for 2 months. The bleeding almost stopped and then resumed. I took turmeric 4 - 00 capsules every 1/2 hr for 2 days and am now taking 4 -00capsules every hr + 1 -00 alfalfa in addition to echineaca 2-00caps. 4x a day - I also had gall bladder problems last year in june - did the flush and still had niggles on and off but since starting to drink milk thistle tea I feel that has helped my liver and gall bladder - but now this bleeding - I appreciate the encouragement to work out health problems with herbs and diet rather than the invasive/drug procedures offered by the AMA. How long should I use the turmeric . What is the two month normalization program you mentioned in your above June 4, 2001 post?

Hi, I am 26 years old, single, not currently sexually active, and I am overweight. I use the treadmill 20 minutes everyday and I lift weights. My periods were never normal from age 13-25 as I would have a period once every two to four months along with the cramps and headaches. Now I am having the opposite problem. For the last six months I have had heavy periods lasting 20-30 days with only a 1-2 week lapse between them. Strangely, I no longer have the cramps and headaches, but the blood is thinner than normal with a brighter red, and there are blood clots. I have also recently had other symptoms as well like a recurring sore throat, heart palpitations, backache, chills, and what I assume are hot flashes (I have on at least two occasions had to go outside to get air because I was so warm). I've talked to my doctor and he has recommended that I see a gynecologist. Is it possible that I am entering perimenopause or may have some type of hormone imbalance?

I've been having lower back pain and severe abdominal pain for about four years. Exploratory surgery has turned up multiple adhesions in my abdomen. The surgeon says that all my organs are literally " fused " together ---- that there are no organs free-floating anymore. There's also been microscopic blood in my urine for the past four years --- a specialist said the blood was from polyips on my bladder wall. Last week I started peeing blood --- all blood with lots of big blood clots. I'm currently beeing treated for a bladder infection. What were those clots all about ? ( I've had a complete hysterectomy --------- it was not menstrual blood. )

HI, I have been dealing with bloating after eating, stomach that feels like its always carry a nine trimester baby, (I"m not pregnant). I get major hot flashes right after eating certian foods. I have had my gall bladder checked by a Doctor. They took an ultrasound, they said I have gall stones, they didn't say how many. Just there is for sure to be one that is at least 2 cm in Diameter. Can this size stone be passed safely with a flush, and what do you reccommend for the safest yet the best flush there is out there ? I would appreciate any help. Oh yes, can an ultrasound be used to break up the gall stones ? I desperatly would love to flush my system, I haven't been able to lose weight either. I think it has a lot to do with my gall bladder not workign properly. Please help me. Thank you and May God bless you for your kindness If anyone cares to write to me at rosemary@chilitech.net I wouldn't mind any info. Thanks

Its not a very heavy one and I have a possible water infection. Is it possible the water infection is keeping my period from stopping or do you think there may be something wrong. I have had my period for three montha straight. My lower back and lower front is so sore I can barely stand. I also have really large blood clots when I go to the bathroom. Their is more blood in the toilet then on my pad. My doctor is not the least bit concerned. Before this started I had'nt had a period in 3 months. My doctor has put me on the patch which I have been taking for three weeks but their has been no change, I'm worried about losing to much blood. I was told I had a very small cyst so I really can't see that being the problem and I haven't had sex in three years. And I'm still very young at twenty-seven I would really like your opinon.

Dear Anonymous,

That certainly isnt normal bleeding, Sounds like you may have endometriosis where the lining of the womb comes away, the same thing was happening to my mother for over 3 years and she was told she was losing her lifes blood please dont let it go on that long before the darn doctors will do anything about it. Insist that you know there is something wrong. Im not a doctor so I cant tell you that is for sure what is wrong with you but the symptoms sure sound familiar. Hope you find out something soon.

I have a question, since this kinda relates to abnormal bleeding. I'm on OrthroEvra (the patch) and I wanted to know if breakthrough bleeding, or in my case, I was masturbating and when I wiped my hand off, their was some blood on the towel, does this mean you're not pregnant. Like, if you exprience bleeding during the patch does it mean you're not pregnant?
(and yes I am asking becuase I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend. Sometimes he likes to start off without a condom, but I heard that precum can have semen in it, so I became rather worried, even though I'm on the patch.)

i have a question to ask. Its also related to abnormal bleeding. For the past 3-4 mnths i have not had my regular periods during the time when its usually due. Instead, i get this brownish sort of discharge and it comes out sometimes as clots or just fluidly-like. It has a very peculiar odour and comes out in small amounts. Im 16yrs old..i dont know if im pregnant or not or could it be something else.

I am 20. and for a year and a half i have suffered with adnormal bleeding. I had normal periods, until one day i started with bad cramping and the period never went away. My bleeding would gush out in a very strong flow a couple of times a day, until it became a consant flow of clots. this lasted for three months. i had two DNCs and hormon injections. but it wouldn't stop. one day i began passing out and received five blood tranfusions. my blood presure that day was some where around 30 and my hemaglodan was at 3. the bleeding finaly stoped a few days later with a nothe hormon shot, a depo. shot and four very strong birth contoll pills. for a fews months i was OK taking the 35g. pills once i got down to one a day. but then i started spoting again. my new obgyn made my do some blood work for him and we found that i have factor 12 defiance. but can not relate it to the bleeding. so i have been taking 100g of birth controll a day. tow months ago my obgyn toke me down to 75g a day and i have sence had spotting every day. i now know that my spotting is sress related and that i can not left anything or sit in one possition very long. today i can't even pick up my over wight chuawaha with out bleeding. because of the two dncs i have basicly no uturs lining, and i can't seame to regain one. i have no health insurance so i have not been able to see a hemotolist about my blood disorder. i am going to ask my OBGYN for a historectamy on tuesday, becuase i don't know what else to do, and i cann't live this way any more.
